Ekobae: A Beacon of Hope for Women Artisans and Sustainable Living

Indore: Surbhi Manocha’s journey with Ekobae began with a commitment to creating sustainable livelihoods for women. While working with the Bharat Ki Beti Foundation on menstrual awareness initiatives, she saw the deeper need for economic opportunities in the community. This led her to explore ways to support women through handcrafted products, starting with upcycling old sarees into bags. To fund her venture, she made a bold decision—selling her Harley Davidson bike—and with that, Ekobae was founded.

Today, Ekobae collaborates with over 500 female artisans across India, ensuring fair wages, training, and access to wider markets. From an initial idea to a growing business, the brand has now established two retail stores in Indore and continues to expand its customer base.
Entrepreneurship comes with its challenges, but through the Women Startup Program (WSP), Surbhi found the right structure to scale her business. The program’s mentorship, milestone tracking, and workbook tools on Accubate helped her refine operations and set clear goals. With this support, she was able to make her business more organized, focused, and results driven.
Ekobae’s work has been recognized by organizations such as the National Commission for Women, LIONS Club, and FICCI FLO, and Surbhi was honored with the FICCI FLO Trailblazer Award. She has also been invited as a speaker at multiple conferences, sharing her insights and experiences. Looking ahead, Surbhi aims to expand Ekobae’s reach by building an omnichannel presence, strengthening its online platform, and opening more stores in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities. Through it all, her focus remains on sustainability, craftsmanship, and creating opportunities for women.
Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. and NSRCEL- IIM Bangalore has launched Women Startup Program under Kotak Mahindra Bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility commitment, aimed at empowering aspiring female entrepreneurs from across the country. This initiative, launched under KMBL’s CSR commitment towards Education & Livelihood, seeks to support ambitious and innovative women by enabling them to build scalable businesses.

The Women Startup Program has served as a catalyst for over 26,089 women, helping them develop entrepreneurial and managerial skills. The programme’s entrepreneurs come from a diverse range of over 20 sectors, including technology, social impact, agriculture, retail, healthcare, energy and environment, textile, apparel, and many others. They represent 24 states across India. To date, the program has provided incubation support to over 658 ventures and facilitated the creation of 2593 jobs.
