Parleen Gill: From Indian Idol Fame to Finding His Voice Again

Mumbai: Singer Parleen Gill, who rose to fame with Indian Idol Season 3, believes that talent alone is never enough — faith in oneself matters even more. From performing on one of India’s biggest reality shows to singing across international stages, his journey has been filled with success, struggle, loss and rediscovery. Parleen entered the music industry at a time when social media did not exist. Television was the only medium, and reality shows enjoyed massive viewership. “Our TRPs used to touch almost nine. That time was very different and very special,” he recalls.
Inspired by Abhijeet Sawant’s win in Indian Idol Season 1, Parleen decided to pursue music seriously. He dropped out of college and spent one full year doing rigorous riyaaz, waking up at 4 a.m. every day. “That one year completely changed my life,” he says.
Although he did not win Indian Idol 3, the show opened many doors. Sony Music offered contracts and albums, and his career moved in the right direction. However, his personal life took an emotional toll. From love to marriage and eventually divorce, eight years of his life left him broken and mentally exhausted. “There were years when people kept asking where I had disappeared. Those years destroyed me,” he shares honestly. Parleen admits he went through depression and a very dark phase before finding strength again. His comeback came with the support of his childhood friend, who is now his wife. “She brought me back to life. Today my dreams are her dreams, and her dreams are mine,” he says. Now at 38, Parleen feels more mature — not just as a person, but also as a songwriter. He believes quality music is missing today due to the race for quantity. His dream is simple yet powerful — to leave behind meaningful songs for the next generation.“Technology can create music, but it can never replace the soul of a real singer,” he signs off.
