“If my heart connects with a character, only then can I truly bring it alive”: Tarun Khanna

Mumbai: Actor Tarun Khanna, known for his roles in shows like Karm Phal Data Shani, Radha Krishna, Jai Kanhaiya Lal Ki, Devi Adi Parashakti, Katha Vishwas Ke Itihaas Ki, Santoshi Maa, and Param Avtar Shri Krishna, believes there is no fixed formula when it comes to acting. Instead of adhering to a structured method, he focuses on emotionally connecting with his character, which he feels is the most authentic way to portray it.Sharing his approach, he says, “There is no single method to achieve a character. While I may incorporate different techniques, the most important thing for me is to follow my heart. If I feel deeply connected to the character, only then can I portray it convincingly. Sometimes that requires changing my physicality, altering my voice, or even adapting my walk. I keep practicing consistently so I’m always ready. Mimicking people, in fact, is a great exercise that helps me a lot.”
He further emphasizes that he doesn’t rely on any predefined acting system. “I’ve read about various methods, but I don’t strictly follow anyone else’s approach. I’ve developed my own process, which is all about understanding and feeling the character—his background, education, personality, and relationships. Whether he is aggressive or submissive, and how he interacts with others—these details help me shape the role,” he explains.
While methods haven’t influenced him much, Tarun credits legendary actors for inspiring his craft. He says that stalwarts like Amitabh Bachchan, Nana Patekar, Ashutosh Rana, Dilip Kumar, Naseeruddin Shah, Irrfan Khan, and Manoj Bajpayee have played a significant role in shaping his understanding of performance.
Talking about adapting to different genres, he adds, “After more than two decades in the industry, acting has become second nature to me. Now, when I read a script, I instinctively understand what the role demands.”
