Mumbai: Some memories are not actively searched for—they quietly wait for the right moment to find us. For actress Sandeepa Dhar, a recent visit to Kashmir became exactly that: an emotional journey through family history, forgotten treasures, and the timeless beauty of her homeland.
Sharing glimpses from her trip on social media, Sandeepa wrote, “There are some memories you don’t go looking for. They just wait for you.” The sentiment perfectly captured the essence of her deeply personal visit back to the Valley.
Last week, Sandeepa stepped inside her ancestral home in Kashmir, a house that has remained largely untouched since the exodus. With no electricity, no running water, and very little left inside, the structure stands as a silent witness to decades gone by. During her visit, she discovered an intricately crafted wooden cabinet, estimated to be nearly 80 to 90 years old, still standing almost perfectly intact. Reflecting on the moment, she shared, “It felt like finding a little piece of our past still waiting for us.” The discovery served as a poignant reminder of the stories and memories that continue to live within the walls of a home.
The journey also revealed smaller but equally meaningful treasures. Hidden inside an old cupboard were vintage Air India boarding passes and baggage tags, likely dating back 30 to 40 years. Sandeepa described them as “tiny pieces of paper, completely insignificant at the time, but somehow they survived everything.” She also found her uncle’s beautifully tailored suits, some made in the United Kingdom, offering another glimpse into a chapter of family history preserved through time.

Beyond nostalgia, Kashmir continued to enchant the actress with its unmatched beauty. From the blooming flowers of Shalimar Bagh and vibrant marigolds to the serenity of Nagin Lake and the breathtaking views from Pari Mahal, every corner offered a moment worth capturing. Speaking about one of her favourite spots, she wrote, “Everyone talks about Dal Lake, but Nagin Lake will always have my heart.”
A peaceful visit to Shankaracharya Temple added a sense of calm and reflection to the journey. Through her words and photographs, Sandeepa Dhar offered a heartfelt reminder that some places never stop feeling like home—and some memories never truly leave us.
