51 Robotic Bariatric Surgeries in 14 Hours: A New Benchmark
51 Robotic Bariatric Surgeries in 14 Hours: Dr. Mohit Bhandari and Team Mohak Set a New Benchmark
Six robotic systems. One designated console surgeon. One Indian team. A landmark demonstration of surgical scale, precision and indigenous capability.
Indore: On the occasion of IndiaтАЩs 80th Independence Day, Dr. Mohit Bhandari and Team Mohak marked the national milestone with an extraordinary achievement: 51 robotic bariatric and metabolic surgeries completed in just 14 hours on August 15.
The unprecedented initiative brought together six robotic systems, one designated console surgeon and one highly coordinated Indian clinical team, demonstrating the scale at which advanced robotic bariatric surgery can be delivered. The achievement required meticulous planning, standardised protocols, seamless coordination between surgical, anaesthesia, nursing and support teams, and the ability to maintain consistency throughout the intensive 14 hour programme.
A total of 51 patients underwent robotic bariatric and metabolic surgery, comprising 30 men and 21 women, representing a diverse patient cross-section. The patients ranged in age from 21 to 77 years, with an average age of 43.6 years, and an average body weight of approximately 122 kg.
With more than 40,000 bariatric surgeries performed by Dr. Mohit Bhandari, the 51-patient cohort reflects his extensive clinical experience in managing patients across a broad spectrum of bariatric and metabolic needs.

The achievement was conducted under external observation, with documentation submitted to Guinness World Records and the World Book of Records for formal recognition.Beyond the record attempt, the initiative demonstrated how technology, clinical expertise and operational excellence can come together to significantly expand surgical capacity.
тАЬThe number 51 is only one part of this achievement. What matters is what it represents: the ability of an Indian surgical team to combine advanced technology, indigenous innovation, clinical expertise and teamwork to expand access to complex surgery. On our 80th Independence Day, this is our way of celebrating IndiaтАЩs capability to build and deliver the future of healthcare,тАЭ said Dr. Mohit Bhandari.
A Milestone for Surgical Swaraj
The 80th Independence Day context makes the achievement particularly significant. As India celebrates 80 years of independence, Surgical Swaraj represents a new form of self-reliance: the ability to develop, adopt and deliver advanced surgical care through Indian talent and indigenous technology.
The use of indigenous surgical robotics in a high-volume bariatric programme demonstrates how innovation can move from technology development to real-world healthcare delivery. It also supports the larger goal of decentralising advanced healthcare, taking sophisticated surgical capabilities beyond a handful of metropolitan centres.
The initiative aligns with the Government of IndiaтАЩs vision of strengthening domestic medical technology, encouraging innovation and reducing dependence on imported medical devices.
Dr. Mohit Bhandari: Bringing Scale and Innovation to Bariatric Surgery
Dr. Mohit Bhandari is a leading bariatric and metabolic surgeon with extensive experience in advanced minimally invasive and robotic surgery. Over the years, he has championed the integration of technology, standardised surgical protocols and evidence-based clinical practice to improve outcomes in bariatric and metabolic procedures.
His work has also focused on taking robotic surgery beyond being a technology intervention and making it an integral part of a structured, high-volume surgical ecosystem. His clinical and academic engagement with the global bariatric community has further contributed to the evolution and standardisation of metabolic surgery.
Mohak Bariatrics and Robotics: Building a High-Volume Robotic Ecosystem
Mohak Bariatrics and Robotics, Indore, has established itself as a specialised centre for bariatric, metabolic and robotic surgery, bringing together a multidisciplinary team, advanced surgical infrastructure, clinical expertise, training and research.
Under Dr. BhandariтАЩs leadership, Mohak has focused on creating a robust ecosystem where technology and surgical expertise work together at scale. Its growing experience in robotic bariatric surgery reflects the changing landscape of Indian healthcare, where advanced procedures are increasingly being delivered outside traditional metropolitan hubs.
The 51-surgery initiative is a culmination of this approach: high-volume expertise, advanced technology, meticulous planning and a deeply coordinated Indian surgical team.
51 surgeries. 14 hours. Six robotic systems. One designated console surgeon. One Indian team.
More than a number, the achievement is a powerful statement about IndiaтАЩs ability to scale advanced surgery, strengthen indigenous healthcare capabilities and make sophisticated treatment more accessible.
