Awareness Can Create Change, Not Criticism : Kamal Maharshi on Writing, Composing and Singing the Title Track of Condumb

Mumbai: Music composer, lyricist and singer Kamal Maharshi has lent his creative voice to Condumb, a short film produced by Janvi Doshi and Kaushik Thakkar under Shreenathji Mediaworks. Having written, composed and sung the film’s title track, Kamal says the project instantly resonated with him because of its socially relevant subject and the need to raise awareness through music.
Speaking about his first reaction to the film’s concept, Kamal shares, “When I heard the concept, I realized that this problem exists everywhere around us. People irresponsibly throw away not just used condoms but many other forms of waste. It is something people need to be made aware of, and I felt that an in-your-face rap song was the best way to address it. Rap originated as a genre to raise voices and highlight important issues.”
Explaining how he approached the lyrics, Kamal says he wanted the song to speak directly to those contributing to the problem while also representing the concerns of responsible citizens. “The idea was to address people making such mistakes and also give voice to those who want to stop irresponsible waste disposal. Rhythm and Poetry—RAP—was the most entertaining and impactful way to communicate that message.”
While handling the writing, composition and vocals for the track, Kamal did not find the process particularly difficult, though he admits it was a refreshing change. “I wouldn’t call it challenging because this is my profession and I was chosen for my expertise. However, it was a different genre from my regular work, and that made the experience enjoyable and exciting.”Describing the musical style, he reveals that the song adopts a reporting-like rap format. “It’s more about presenting what is happening around us. It could have been a diss track, but criticism and disrespect don’t solve problems. Awareness does, and that became the core of the song.”
Kamal firmly believes that music remains one of the strongest promotional tools for cinema. “Songs have always been the best way to promote films. Music is loved by Indians across generations, so I am confident the title track will help audiences connect with Condumb.”
Sharing his hopes for viewers, he adds, “I want people to become more responsible and encourage others to do the same.”
Talking about his collaboration with the team, Kamal speaks fondly of director Kaushik Thakkar and producer Janvi Doshi. “Kaushik and I have been friends for a long time. He is emotional, creative and incredibly fun to work with. Janvi is the cherry on top of the cake—quite literally, because Kaushik often says, ‘Milke cake banayenge’ while discussing projects. Shreenathji Mediaworks feels like home, and together we have created wonderful work. I am excited to continue raising the bar with future projects.”
