Mumbai: Following his viral appearance on India’s Got Latent, singer-songwriter som. returns with ‘Taari Maari Preet’, a Garba-inspired single featuring vocalist Anchal Thakur, released by Universal Music India. Rooted in the timeless love of Krishna and Radha, the song explores love, longing and the pain of letting someone go.
Set against the moments before Krishna leaves Vrindavan to face Kansa, ‘Taari Maari Preet’ reimagines the familiar Krishna-Radha story through a bittersweet lens, with Krishna longing for one last meeting and Radha choosing distance as an act of love.
Speaking about the song, som. shares, “I wanted to explore a side of the Krishna-Radha story that we don’t often hear. We usually hear about Radha longing for Krishna, but in this song, Krishna is the one searching for her, wanting to see her one last time before he leaves. Radha knows that if she sees him, she may not be able to let him go, so she chooses not to meet him. There is so much love in that decision, even though it comes from separation. That emotion really stayed with me while making the song.”
For Anchal Thakur, the emotional depth of the story was what made the collaboration particularly special. Speaking about the collaboration, Anchal Thakur says, “What really drew me to Taari Maari Preet was the emotion behind the story. It is not just about Radha and Krishna, but about loving someone enough to understand that you cannot hold on to them. Radha’s decision not to meet Krishna carries so much love and pain at the same time. I think that is what makes the song so relatable even today. It was beautiful to bring that emotion into the music with som.”
Musically, ‘Taari Maari Preet’ draws from the energy and cultural roots of Garba, while using a contemporary soundscape to tell this deeply emotional story. The coming together of som.’s distinct musical sensibility and Anchal Thakur’s expressive vocals gives the track a balance of movement and melancholy.
Following the momentum of his India’s Got Latent appearance, ‘Taari Maari Preet’ marks another step in som.’s journey as an artist, bringing a timeless love story into a contemporary musical setting.
