First Review of Karthik Subbaraj’s Dorothy: Anurag Kashyap Calls It His “Boldest and Best Work So Far

Mumbai: Even before its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Dorothy has received a glowing vote of confidence from one of Indian cinema’s most acclaimed filmmakers. Director Anurag Kashyap has shared his first reaction after a private screening of Karthik Subbaraj’s much-awaited film, calling it the filmmaker’s finest work yet.
Taking to Letterboxd after watching the film, Kashyap awarded Dorothy a near-perfect rating and wrote, “Karthik Subbaraj’s boldest and best work so far. So surprising and pleasantly shocking that you just can not see it coming.” The review marks the film’s first public reaction and has already heightened anticipation among cinema lovers.
Known for pathbreaking films such as Black Friday, Gangs of Wasseypur, Ugly and Kennedy, Anurag Kashyap has long been regarded as one of India’s most influential filmmakers. His endorsement carries significant weight, particularly for a filmmaker like Karthik Subbaraj, whose work has consistently pushed the boundaries of mainstream Tamil cinema.
Backed by Jio Studios and Sikhya Entertainment, Dorothy recently unveiled its first teaser ahead of its world premiere at TIFF 2026. The Tamil-language feature has been selected for the festival’s prestigious Centrepiece section, which showcases celebrated filmmakers and highly anticipated world premieres from around the world.

Written and directed by Karthik Subbaraj, Dorothy is his landmark 10th feature film and is described as his most emotionally resonant work to date. Set against the backdrop of caste, violence and prejudice, the story follows an enduring friendship tested by deep-rooted divisions, exploring whether compassion can survive in a world fractured by hate.
The recently released teaser offered audiences a striking first glimpse into the film’s haunting visual world and emotionally charged narrative. Adding to its emotional resonance is an original score by Maestro Ilaiyaraaja, marking the legendary composer’s milestone 1,540th film.
Produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain in association with Dhammam Films, Dorothy marks the first collaboration between Jio Studios and Sikhya Entertainment following Jio Studios’ investment in the Oscar-winning banner. The film stars Sananth, Rishikanth and Keerthy Suresh in pivotal roles and is slated for a worldwide theatrical release on September 25, 2026.
