‘One decision, one second, multiple replays’: Ravi Shastri & Sidhu speak for umpires
~Ravi Shastri and Sunil Gavaskar get candid about the unsung heroes of cricket, players’ well-being and memorable moments from the game ~
Mumbai : Behind every great cricketing moment are stories that rarely make it to the scoreboard. Netflix’s The Great Indian Kapil Show Season 5 brings cricketing legends Sunil Gavaskar and Ravi Shastri, who is making his first ever appearance on the show, together with Kapil Sharma for an evening packed with laughter, nostalgia and fascinating tales from inside the world of Indian cricket.
Kapil Sharma kicks off the conversation by pointing out that Ravi Shastri has done almost everything cricket-related: from playing, captaincy, commentary to coaching but has never been an umpire. So, what made him stay away from the one role? Ravi explains that while umpires often face criticism for their decisions, he believes it is one of the most difficult jobs in cricket. An umpire has to stand in the heat for nearly six hours, maintain intense concentration throughout the game and make crucial calls in a matter of seconds. Ravi adds that umpires deserve far more credit for the demands of the job, reminding everyone that they are human too and, like anyone else, can make mistakes. Adding to the thought, Sidhu points out how the pressure on umpires has only increased with technology. An umpire makes a decision in a second, while a hundred machines and multiple replays scrutinise that same decision afterwards. He stresses that umpires deserve their due credit for making split-second calls under immense pressure.
Ravi also recalls a memorable incident involving Mohammed Shami, biryani and a crucial match against South Africa. With South Africa needing 100 runs with eight wickets in hand, Ravi noticed Shami looking full from lunch and asked the bowling coach to get him back on the field. After initially scolding him for the biryani, Ravi ensured Shami was rewarded with a fresh biryani after his match-winning performance.
The conversation then steers to players’ well-being and families accompanying them on tours. Sunil Gavaskar recalls being among the first to take his wife on tour, while Ravi remembers Virat Kohli requesting that his then-girlfriend Anushka Sharma accompany him on a long tour. Ravi approached the board, believing that Virat’s mental well-being was important for the team, and the request was eventually approved.
Tune in tonight to catch the latest episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show Season 5, only on Netflix.
