Shreya Ghoshal Continues to Expand Her Independent Music Journey with New Single ‘Bairi Piya’

Mumbai: Nearly three decades into a career that has made her one of India’s most recognisable and celebrated voices, Shreya Ghoshal continues to evolve as an artist, exploring music beyond the traditional boundaries of playback. While film music remains an integral part of her musical legacy, her independent work has given her the freedom to explore different sounds, collaborations and creative spaces. Her latest single, ‘Bairi Piya’, released via Universal Music India, is the latest addition to this journey.
Shreya’s relationship with independent music is not new. Over the years, she has explored several independent releases that have allowed her to experiment outside the film music format. What continues to evolve is the range of artists, sounds and musical spaces she chooses to explore, with her recent work taking her across languages, genres and generations.
Her recent collaboration on ‘Kalyani (Remix)’ saw her join ARJN, KDS and FIFTY4 in reimagining MVR’s already successful Malayalam independent track. The original Kalyani had emerged as a breakout independent success, crossing over 200 million streams and reaching audiences well beyond Kerala. With Shreya bringing her voice to the remix, the track went on to reach No. 1 on the Indian music charts while also making its mark on global charts, taking the collaboration to an even wider audience.
With ‘Bairi Piya’, Shreya continues that exploration, this time stepping into a contemporary pop setting that allows her to lean into a softer and more intimate side of her vocal expression. The track combines warm synths, clean beats and a gentle rhythmic pulse with subtle Indian classical touches, creating a sound that feels contemporary while retaining an unmistakably Indian musical sensibility.
More than a departure from what audiences know her for, ‘Bairi Piya’ reflects the creative freedom that independent music has offered Shreya throughout her career. It gives her the opportunity to move between musical worlds, work with different creative voices and choose songs based on the space they offer her as an artist.
Speaking about the release, Shreya Ghoshal says, “Independent music has been an important part of my journey for a long time because it gives me the freedom to explore songs and sounds outside the usual spaces I get to experience through playback music. Every independent project has brought something different for me, whether it was experimenting with a sound, collaborating with another artist or simply approaching a song differently. With ‘Bairi Piya’, I was drawn to the melody and the simplicity of the song, and I enjoyed exploring this softer, contemporary space. I think this is what I enjoy most about independent music, the freedom to keep discovering different sides of myself through it.”
For an artist whose voice has been part of the soundtrack of multiple generations, ‘Bairi Piya’ is another step in a musical journey that continues to expand beyond the conventional playback format. As the Indian music landscape becomes increasingly fluid across film, independent music, languages and genres, Shreya continues to explore new spaces while bringing the distinctive vocal identity that audiences have known and loved for decades.
Today, Shreya reaches a vast global audience, with more than 50 million monthly listeners on Spotify and a significant presence across digital platforms. ‘Bairi Piya’ marks the latest chapter in her ongoing exploration of independent music, adding another contemporary dimension to an already expansive musical repertoire.
