“Family pressure is real, but it can never justify violence,” says Somy Ali on Pune murder case

Mumbai: Actor, activist, and humanitarian Somy Ali has shared her thoughts on the shocking Pune murder case, calling it a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of emotional well-being, honest communication, and accountability. Reflecting on the incident, she said the alleged premeditated nature of the crime made it even more disturbing.
“My first reaction was deep sadness mixed with profound discomfort. When I learned that the murder was allegedly planned in advance, it made the tragedy even more painful. A young man lost his life in a calculated way, and a young woman has now destroyed her own future along with her other boyfriend. These cases are never simple, but when planning and betrayal are involved, it becomes even harder to process. It leaves you wondering how someone could reach such a dark and morbid place. How can they devalue life so much?” Somy said.
The case has once again sparked discussions around consent and family pressure in relationships. Sharing her perspective, Somy acknowledged that many young people still struggle to refuse marriages they do not want, but stressed that no amount of pressure can justify criminal actions.
“Yes, many young people, especially young women, still struggle to say ‘no.’ In our society, once families fix a marriage, backing out is often seen as bringing shame. However, this case also shows that simply being unable to say ‘no’ does not justify harming someone. There is a profound difference between feeling trapped and choosing to commit a crime. We need to teach young people that while family pressure is real, there are always better ways to handle it than violence or betrayal,” she said.
Somy believes open communication within families can play a vital role in preventing such situations from escalating into tragedies.

“Open communication could have helped prevent this tragedy. If the young woman had felt safe enough to speak honestly with her family about not wanting the marriage, perhaps things would not have escalated this far. At the same time, families also need to create space where children can express their feelings without fear of rejection or anger. When communication breaks down completely, young people sometimes make irreversible and destructive decisions,” she shared.
The actor also emphasized that emotional well-being deserves much greater attention in relationships, saying unresolved emotional struggles often lead to unhealthy choices.
“Emotional well-being is still not given enough importance in our relationships and families. Many young people enter relationships, whether arranged or love marriages, while carrying emotional confusion, dependency, or unresolved issues. When someone is emotionally dependent on another person and feels they cannot live without them, it can lead to very dangerous thinking. This case is a painful example of how emotional immaturity, secrecy, and lack of healthy boundaries can destroy multiple lives,” she explained.
Commenting on the accused’s father’s statement that his daughter deserves the harshest punishment if found guilty, Somy described it as both heartbreaking and courageous.
“I found his statement both heartbreaking and courageous. It takes great strength for a father to publicly say that justice must come first, even when it involves his own child. At the same time, it also reflects the deep tragedy of this case, that a parent feels they must choose between their child and what is right. It reminds us that when someone commits a serious crime, the consequences extend far beyond the individual. Entire families are left broken, no matter what the final judgment is,” she concluded.
