Fashion can be a powerful vehicle for dialogue and inspiration: Anjali Phougat

Mumbai: There are designers who dress the world, and then there are those who dress it with intention. Anjali Phougat belongs firmly in the second category. A designer, entrepreneur, and cultural advocate, she has spent years turning the language of fabric and form into something far more meaningful, a conversation between heritage and the world. Her presence at the Cannes Film Festival is not incidental. It is, by every measure, a statement. This year, she returned to the French Riviera carrying a story rooted in devotion, spirituality, and the timeless grace of Indian tradition, and the world listened.
When asked how she would describe herself, she does not reach for the expected. She said, “Visionary. Purpose-driven. Resilient. Spiritual. Global. Authentic. Impactful. These words best reflect my journey as a designer, entrepreneur, and advocate for cultural storytelling through fashion.”
Her work has found one of its most consistent stages at Cannes, where she has now built a presence spanning seven years. She said, “I have been attending the Cannes Film Festival for several years, using the platform not only to showcase fashion but also to represent Indian heritage, craftsmanship, and meaningful storytelling on a global stage.”

But this year’s experience was deeply meaningful. She said, “Beyond the glamour, it became an opportunity to share a message of devotion, culture, and inner transformation. The response from international media, industry leaders, and audiences was overwhelming, and I felt really honoured to receive the global fashion visionary award at the GSF Awards in Cannes, and it reinforced my belief that fashion can be a powerful vehicle for dialogue and inspiration.”
At the heart of this year’s presence was a creative choice as bold as it was deeply personal; she arrived draped in the story of Radha. She said, “Radha represents unconditional love, devotion, surrender, and divine feminine energy.” In a world often focused on external success, I wanted to remind people of the power of inner connection, compassion, and spiritual consciousness. The Radha-inspired look was my tribute to India’s timeless spiritual wisdom and its relevance in today’s world.”
“The ensemble was a couture interpretation inspired by Radha’s divine grace. It featured intricate handcrafted embroidery, traditional Indian artistry, and symbolic elements reflecting devotion and spirituality. Every detail was thoughtfully designed to celebrate Indian heritage while presenting it through a contemporary global fashion lens,” she added.
Beyond the red carpet and the cameras, Anjali engaged with Cannes in the fullest sense. She said, “This year at Cannes, I participated in red-carpet appearances, media interviews, networking events, brand and industry engagements, and international cultural exchanges. I was honoured to receive recognition for my contributions to fashion and entrepreneurship while continuing to promote Indian craftsmanship and meaningful storytelling through design.”
Year after year, Cannes has served as both mirror and megaphone for her work. She said, “Cannes provides a global platform to expand cultural influence, build international relationships, and amplify the message behind my work.”
“Each year, it allows me to connect with new audiences, strengthen my global presence, and create opportunities for Indian artisans, designers, and creative talent to gain international recognition. More importantly, it helps me use fashion as a bridge between cultures while inspiring others to pursue their purpose with authenticity and courage,” Anjali ended.
